What is direct/pure democracy?
Every single person is involved directly in the government process (Athens, New England town meetings)
What is indirect/representative democracy?
People elect peers to operate the government on their behalf (USA, Japan, Canada, France)
What is a dictatorship?
They rely on fear imposed by the military and are not inherently evil. (Iraq)
What are the five characteristics of democracy?
- Majority rule
- Equality
- Liberty
- Necessity of compromise
- Individual worth
What is a confederate government?
Where the regional governments retain supremacy and delegate few tasks to the national government.
What is a republic?
State in which the supreme power rests in the people and their elected reps or officers.
What is a unitary government?
Governmental power resides in the central government
What is Federalism?
Divides a nation’s power among national, regional, and local governments
