chapter 2 Flashcards
Coronary Artery Disease definition
accumulation, inflammation, or rupture of plaques in coronary arteries
Ischemia is primarily associated with
smoking, diabetes, dietary habits and hypertension
Ischemia symptoms
angina (stable or unstable), nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, and sweating
CAD intervention
lifestyles modifications
Meds: statins (lipitor), nitroglycerin, calcium channel blockers,
Revascularization of heart muscle - PTCA w/ or w/o stent, or CABG
Myocardial Infarction
Cardiac muscle undergoes irreversible death or necrosis secondary to hypoxemia
MI subseequent complications
Pericarditis
mural thrombosis and embolism
myocardial rupture
heart failure
MI Intervention
Immediate intervention with aspirin and nitroglycerin
Surgical procedures like PTCA and CABG
Cardiac Rehab 3 Phases
Heart Failure
diminished cardiac output, heart is no longer pumping adequately
Heart Failure leads to
left ventricular hypertrophy and heart remodeling
Heart Failure can also lead to
Edema (pulmonary and systemic) leading to dyspnea, hypoxia and muscle atrophy
Cardiomegaly (enlarged heart)
HF Intervention
Lifestyle modification, hypertension medication
Surgical procedures:
heart transplant
AICD
LVAD
