Chapter 1 Flashcards
Primary Heart Function
Deliver oxygen and nutrients to vital organs and muscle
Assists in elimination of waste products (CO2)
Supports temperature regulation
The Heart is
posterior to sternum
anterior to thoracic vertebrae
bordered laterally with lungs
tilted at an angle (downward toward the left)
2/3 of heart is
on the left side of the sternum
The base of the heart is
the superior portion of the heart, which receives great vessels
The Apex of heart is
the inferior portion, and lies against the diaphragm
Fibrous pericardium
anchors heart to the mediastinum, diaphragm, and connective tissue covering great vessels
Serous Pericardium (double membrane)
parietal pericardium (outer layer)
visceral pericardium (inner layer)
Epicardium
outermost layer
Myocardium
middle layer, cardiac tissue
Myocardium includes
intercalated discs, gap junctions, and desmosomes
allow transmission of action potential
Endocardium
innermost layer of the heart; continuous with artery linings
Atria
receive blood from pulmonary or systemic circulations; deliver blood to ventricles
Ventricles
pump blood to pulmonary or systemic circulations
Atrioventricular Valve
Tricuspid and Bicuspid (mitral) valve
Tricuspid Valve
separates right atria and ventricle
