Chapter 2 Flashcards
Producer
an organism, as a plant, that is able to produce its own food from inorganic substances.
Herbivore
A animal that feeds on plants
Consumer
an organism, usually an animal, that feeds on plants or other animals.
Carnivore
an animal that eats flesh.
Herbivore
feeding on plants.
Omnivore
eating both animal and plant foods.
Energy pyramid
A pyramid that shows how much energy that is stored at each level of the food web
Predation
a relation between animals in which one organism captures and feeds on others
Symbiosis
the living together of two dissimilar organisms, as in mutualism, commensalism, amensalism, or parasitism
Parasitism
a relation between organisms in which one lives as a parasite on another
Mutualism
a relationship between two species of organisms in which both benefit from the association.
Commensalism
a type of relationship between two species of a plant, animal, fungus, etc., in which one lives with, on, or in another without damage to either.
Decomposer
an organism, usually a bacterium or fungus, that breaks down the cells of dead plants and animals into simpler substances.
Fishery
the occupation or industry of catching, processing, or selling fish or shellfish.
Zooplankton
the aggregate of animal or animallike organisms in plankton, as protozoans.
Phytoplankton
the aggregate of plants and plantlike organisms in plankton.
Plankton
the aggregate of passively floating, drifting, or somewhat motile organisms occurring in a body of water, primarily comprising microscopic algae and protozoa.
Food web
a series of organisms related by predator-prey and consumer-resource interactions; the entirety of interrelated food chains in an ecological community.
Food chain
Ecology . a series of organisms interrelated in their feeding habits, the smallest being fed upon by a larger one, which in turn feeds a still larger one, etc.
Abiotic
of or characterized by the absence of life or living organisms.
Trade-off
a balance achieved between two desirable but incompatible features; a compromise
Biome
a complex biotic community characterized by distinctive plant and animal species and maintained under the climatic conditions of the region, especially such a community that has developed to climax.
Ecology
the branch of biology dealing with the relations and interactions between organisms and their environment, including other organisms.
Invasive species
a nomenclature term and categorization phrase used for flora and fauna, and for specific restoration-preservation processes in native habitats, with several definitions.
Nonnative species
a nomenclature term and categorization phrase used for flora and fauna, and for specific restoration-preservation processes in native habitats, with several definitions.
Biodiversity
diversity among and within plant and animal species in an environment.
Ecosystem
Is a complex set of relationships among the living resources
Biotic
resulting from living things, esp. in their ecological relations.
Predator
an animal that naturally preys on others
Organism
any contiguous living system
Sustainability
is the capacity to endure.
