Chapter 19 - Viruses Flashcards
What are viruses
Genetic information packaged in a protein coat, infectious particles
Are viruses alive?
NO- simplest unit of life is the cell and viruses are smaller than cells.
YES- viruses evolve as their genome mutates. New strands of viruses can emerge, they can replicate and reproduce.
To replicate : need a host cell
What experiment showed something smaller than a bacterium existed?
Tobacco mosaic disease in plants
What is a capsid?
Protein shell that encloses the viral genome
Genome of a virus is…
DNA or RNA (ss or ds)
Various shapes of capsids:
- rod shaped
- polyhedral
- more complex (T4)
What are capsids built from?
Capsomeres
What are the bacterial défenses against phages?
- restriction enzymes
- CRISP-Cas system
Example of a temperate phage
Phage lambda
Which phage undergoes lytic cycle only?
Virulent phage (T4)
Which phage undergoes lysogenic cycle and lytic cycle?
Temperate phage
What is the role of Reverse transcriptase
Catalyses the synthesis of a DNA strand complementary to the viral RNA
What is effective to treat viral diseases in animals?
Vaccines
What are other infectious agents? (7)
Prions Viroids Viruses Bacteria Protists Fungi Parasites
___ = general outbreak of a disease
Epidemic
