Chapter 19 - Viruses Flashcards
Why aren’t viruses considered alive?
Because they are composed of cells and needs to infect a living cell in order to reproduce.
What is a virus?
No organelles of their own; not a real cell
What does it mean when a virus has gone inactive?
Allowing the virus to go dormant
What does a virus do to a cell?
Attaches itself to the cell and infects it by making copies from it
Retrovirus =?
RNA that infects cells & does not have a capsid; can just make an organism sick or even kill it
What is a prion?
A protein infectious particle that alters natural brain proteins making them resemble prions
How do prions differ from viruses & cells?
Utilized in cell’s protein
How do prions reproduce?
Cannot reproduce independently of the cell’s proteins
Are prions alive?
No, they are essentially protein that can kill the brain or parts of it
What is the difference between a cell, virus, virusoid, & prions?
Cell = can reproduce on its own, can utilize energy
Virus = can reproduce when inside of a cell & utilizes cell’s energy/resources to do so
Virusoid = like a virus but with no capsid
Prions = utilizes only in cell’s protein
