17th Amendment
Gave voters the power to elect their senators directly.

A nominating election in which voters choose the candidates who later run in a general.
Initiative
Gave voters the power to initiate, or introduce, legislation.
Reeferendum
A companion to the initiative.
Recall
Enables voters to remove an elected official from office by calling for a special election.

2 of the most successful reform mayors were elected in Ohio. They both were self made men who made there fortunes early in life. Then in there midlifes they traded business for politics.
Robert M. La Follette
He began his political career as a loyal republican. However, he soon found himself at odds with Wisconsin’s republican political machine, which was dominated by railroad and lumber interests. He signaled his break from the political machine when he refused a bribe from a boss.
Wisconsin Idea
1st= his efforts for two years, he refused to accept a compromise.
La Follette declared that “NO BREAD is often better than HALF A LOAF” He the urged the state legislature to increase taxes on railroads and public utilities- electric, gas, and streetcar companies- & too create commissions to regulate these companies in the public interest.
