Chapter 19 - Cerebrovascular testing conditions Flashcards
TIA definition
Fleeting neurologic dysfunction without lasting effect
Symptoms less than 24 hours
Reversible ischemic neurologic deficit (RIND) definition
Longer TIA more than 24 hours but recovers completely
Vertebrobasilar insufficiency definition
Fleeting symptoms of bilateral visual blur, paresthesia, vertigo, ataxia, drop attacks
Acute cerebrovascular accident
Symptoms of sudden onset, considered unstable
Stroke in evolution
Symptoms come and go, considered unstable
Completed stroke
No progression or resolution of symptoms, considered stable
Most common cause of brain ischemia
1) Atherothrombotic pathologies
2) Cardiogenic pathologies
3) lacunar infarction
Most common cause of brain hemorrhage
1) hypertension
2) ruptured aneurysm
3) trauma
Define complicated lesion
Fibrous plaque with fibrous tissue, collagen, calcium, cellular debris
Ulcerative lesion define
Deterioration of normally smooth surface of fibrous cap
Intraplaque hemorrhage duplex evidence
Sonolucent area within plaque - higher risk of rupture
Hollenhorst plaque definition
Bright plaque in retinal vessel = cholesterol crystals
Lesion location causing behavioural changes
Temporal lobe - MCA
Lesion location cause homonymous hemianopia
Cerebral cortex
