3 basic concepts are fundamental to all 12-step programs e.g. AA
1- individuals with addictive disorders are powerless over their addcition and their lives are unmanageable
2- although individuals with addicitive disorders are not responsible for their disease, they are responsible for their recovery
3- individuals can no longer blame people, places, and things for thir addiction; they must face their problems and their feelings
blood alcohol level BAL
- 0.05mg% 1-2drinks changes in mood and behavior, impaired judgment
- 0.10 mg% 5-6drinks, clumsiness in voluntary motor activity, lgal level of intoxication in most states
- 0.20 mg% 10-12 drinks depressed fx of entire motor area of the brain
- 0.30mg% 15-18drinks, confusion, stupor
- 0.40mg% 20-24drinks, coma
- 0.50mg% 25-30drinks, death due to respiratory depression
co-ocurring disorders
include the combination of major depression with cocaine addiction, alcoholism with generalized anxiety disorder, borderline personality disorder with episodic polydrug abuse
flashbacks
transitory recurrences of perceptual disturbance caused by a person’s earlier hallucinogenic drug use when he/she is ina drug-free state
theraputic communities
residential treatment programs; synanon, phoenix house, odyssey house
