CHAPTER 18 Flashcards
Describe the turning process..
The process involves moving the cutting tool in a linear motion on the surface of the rotatating workpiece, removing material all around the circumference until desired shape id achieved.
What is the difference between threading and tapping?
Tapping, instead of feeding the tool in a parallel to the axis of rotation of the work, it is fed in an angle. The threads are inside the drilled hole.
Threading, the threads are outside the drilled hole.
Overall, the difference between the two is the surface the work is done on, and the tool used.
What is the difference between peripheral milling and face milling ?
Peripheral milling is more effective at removing large amounts of material from the workpiece, while face milling is used to create a smooth or textured surface finish on the workpiece and just to remove minimal amount.
Types of peripheral milling
Slab milling
Slot milling
Side milling
Straddle milling
Form milling
Types of face milling
Conventional face milling
Partial face milling
Pocket milling
Surface contouring
End milling
Profile milling
What is a machining center?
It is a CNC machine tool that can perform different operations like milling, boring and drilling, with high accuracy and minimal time. On centers the tool rotates and not the work.
What is the difference between a machining center and a turning center?
Machining centers and turning centers are both types of machines used in manufacturing, The main difference between them is their function, machining centers can mill, drill and tap holes in a workpiece, while turning machines can only turn the workpiece. However, both types of machines can perform operations such as grinding and reaming.
