CHAPTER 1 Flashcards
What is the difference among primary, secondary and tertiary industries? Give an example of each category.
The primary sector involves extracting or harvesting natural resources such as agriculture and mining.
The secondary sector involves manufacturing or processing the raw materials into finished or semi-finished goods such as textiles, metals and chemicals .
The tertiary sector involves providing services that support the production and distribution of goods such as transportation and banking.
Name the three basic categories of materials.
Metals
Ceramics
Polymers
How does a shaping process differ from a surface processing operation?
A shaping process changes the geometry of the work (machining) material, while a surface processing operation alters the properties or appearance of the surface of the work (painting or plating).
