chapter 17 vocab Flashcards
Gene pool
the collection of all genes, including different variations (alleles), present within a specific population of organisms
Allele frequency
the number of times an allele occurs in a gene pool
Directional selection
takes place when individuals at one end of the curve have a higher fitness than individuals in the middle or at the other end.(one extreme trait)
stabilizing selection
takes place when individuals near the center of the curve have higher fitness than individuals at the two other ends.(moderate trait )
disruptive selection
takes place when individuals at the upper and lower end of the curve have a higher fitness. (both extreme traits)
gene flow
movement of individuals, and/or the genetic material they carry
speciation
the evolutionary process where a single species splits into two or more distinct species
geographic isolation
two populations are separated by geographic barriers such as rivers and mountains
behavioral isolation
two populations have differences in courtship rituals or other reproductive strategies that involve behavior
temporal isolation
reproduction occurs at different times off the year
