Q

What was the background of Maximilian and Carlota? What motivated each of them to come to Mexico?

A

Maximilian von Hapsburg was the younger brother of the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef, and Carlota was the beautiful Princess Charlotte of Belgium, who married each other on July 27, 1857. The thing that motivated them to come to Mexico was European countries trying to get a prince to rule Mexico because the Mexican government was so in debt.

Q

How had Juarez worsened conditions in Mexico?

A

Juarez worsened conditions in Mexico because he was a terrible leader. He overthrew Santa Anna in 1854, confiscated Church property, and sold it to the highest bidder, who did not care for anyone. The Church could not contribute education or charity for the people, but the government did nothing to replace what the Church did. Juarez only won the war because of U.S. help, but the U.S. stopped helping because the civil war started. France invaded with Maximilian as the replacement ruler, and beat Juarez.

Q

How did Diaz come to power? What was good and what was bad about his rule?

A

He came to power by marching his forces to Mexico City and taking over the government from Juarez’s successor, Lerdo. He was the first president to keep order, and concentrated on material progress. He allowed no one group to gain too much power, and there was little freedom. He restored peace by shooting the bandit chiefs. He also made peace with the Church, but the anti-Catholic laws remained.
