how did women help turn mining towns into successful, permanent towns?
they raised families, established schools, wrote newspapers, washed and made clothes, and cooked
what type of groups moved to the west? how did they use land?
farming families, single women, african americans, and immigrants. farming families needed land for farming since farming land in the east was very scarce. single women were even allowed to own land, unlike women in the east. african americans also moved west because the land was free of discrimination.
how did the railroad affect the development of the west?
it increased the settlement, increased business activity and east-west trade

the federal policy towards the plains indians was to try and make peace.
how did the apache resistance differ from that of the navajo?
the navajo were basically forced to surrender. they had run out of food when u.s. armies raided navajos fields,homes, and livestock. meanwhile the apache still battled the u.s. and avoided capture from americans
how did reformers try to influence native americans’ lives?
some gave lectures about the problems with reservations. while some believed that they should just adopt the way of white people to avoid any more battles.
why did farmers, laborers, and reformers join to form the populist party?
they believed they needed candidates who would help them.
what event signaled the closing of the frontier?
only small portions of the great plains was unsettled. but eventually the government announced homesteaders could file claims on land. settlers claimed more than 11 million acres of land.
what risks did miners face?
work was usually dangerous in the mines. some equipment wasn’t safe, such as the elevators. i don’t think they were sturdy enough to carry many people. since they worked in tunnels, the air was filled with dirt and it was hot and stuffy. the dusty air caused lung disease. eventually there were injuries and deaths due to explosions in mines.
