Chapter 17 (continued) Flashcards
A disorder characterized by uninhibited responses, lack of sustained attention, and hyperactivity.
Most common behavior disorder in childhood
ADHD
a psychological reaction caused by the perception of aversive or threatening stimuli
stress response
a general, imprecise term that can refer either to a stress response or to a situation that elicits a stress response
stress
physiological reactions that prepare us for the strenuous efforts of fighting or fleeing
fight or flight response
Hormone of the adrenal cortex that are important in protein and carbohydrate metabolism, secreted especially in times of stress.
glucocorticoid
a hypothalamic hormone that stimulates the anteriour pituitary gland to secrete ACTH
CRH
a hormone released by the anteriour pituitary gland in response to CRH; stimulates the adrenal cortex to produce glucocorticoids
ACTH
a psychological caused by exposure to a situation of extreme danger and stress; symptoms include recurrent dreams or recollections; can interfere with social activities and cause a feeling of hopelessness
PTSD
the pairing of the context/cue to the aversive stimuli
aquisition
similiar to consolidation
- protein synthesis dependent
- second time window where you can interrupt a memory (memory = maluable)
reconsolidation
- protein synthesis dependent
- laying down of a memory
consolidation
serine/threonine protein kinase that regulates cell growth, cell mobility and protein synthesis
mTOR
release of stress hormones
PVN secretes CRH
CRH activates anteriour pituitary secrete ATCH
ACTH atimulates adrenal cortex
Adrenal cortex releases cortisol (GLUC)
animal models for anxiety
predator odor (emotional stress)
isolation stress (chronic - singly housed)
chroic unpredictable stress (submitted to stressor once a day for several days)
submersion stress
fear conditioning (most common - associate with shock, put in same context - no shock)
social defeat
mTOR/reconsolidation/PTSD
give animal mTOR - reduction in memory
- blocking on reconsolidation
PTSD - give protein inhibitor (b/c reconsolidation is protein synthesis dependent) to interupt memory
can then try to delete fear component of memory.
