Chapter 17 Blood Flashcards
Whole blood contains…
Erythrocytes, RBC
Leukocytes, WBC
Platelets
Plasma
Plasma consists of
Water Electrolytes Proteins (Albumin) Nutrients Respiratory Gases Hormones
Blood plasma functions
Transport nutrients, hormones, proteins, enzymes
Erythrocyte function
Transporting respiratory gases
Hemoglobin
Composed of pigment heme and protein globin. Can carry 4 molecules of oxygen
Benefits of hemoglobin being contained in erythrocytes
- Prevents hemoglobin from breaking into fragments that leak out of bloodstream
- Prevents blood from being more viscous and raising osmotic pressure
Chemical composition of hemoglobin
4 polypeptide chains, two alpha, two beta
Each chain bears a heme group with an iron atom in hte center
Where are blood cells made?
Red bone marrow
What hormone stimulates erythrocyte formation?
Erythropoietin
Anemia
When the blood’s oxygen carrying capacity is too low to support a normal metabolism.
Caused by blood cells, underproduction of RBC, overkilling of RBC
Polycythemia
Abnormal excess of erythrocytes that increases blood viscosity and causes blood to flow sluggishly
Neutrophils
Multilobed nucleus, red and blue granules,
phagocytize bacteria
Never Let Monkeys Eat Bananas
Neutrophils Lymphocytes Monocytes Eosinophils Basophils
Eosinophils
Bi-lobed nucleus, spiderman,
Kill parasitic worms, complex role in allergy and asthma
Basophil
Dotty cytoplasm, rarest leukocyte,
Release histamine, contain heparine
Lymphocyte
Big ass nucleus,
Mount immune response
T Cells (T lymphocytes)
act directly against virus-infected skills
B Cells (B lymphocyte)
produce antibodies
Monocyte
Largest leukocytes, pac man,
Phagocytosis, develop into macrophages when they move into tissues
3 Steps of Hemostasis
- Vascular spasm - vasoconstriction
- Platelet plug formation - platelet aggregate
- Coagulation - Fibrin mesh forms and traps RBC, forms clot
Intrinsic pathway
Factors for clotting are inside the blood.
Triggered by negatively charged surfaces like platelets, collagen, glass
Slower
Extrinsic
Factors for clotting are outside of the blood
Triggered by exposing blood to factor III
Faster
Fibrinolysis
process that removes unneeded blood clot
What is used to restore blood volume?
Normal saline or Ringer’s solution
Three transporting functions of blood
- Delivering oxygen and nutrient
- Transporting metabolic waste
- Transporting hormones
Three regulation functions of blood
- Regulating body temperature
- Regulating normal pH
- Maintaining proper blood volume in circulatory system
Two protective functions of blood
- Preventing blood loss
2. Preventing infection
