Chapter 17 - Biliary System Flashcards

1
Q

The sphincter of oddi is a complex arrangement of smooth muscles around the CBD, pancreatic duct and the ampulla of Vater. What is its fuction?

A
  1. Regulates flow of Bile and pancreatic juices

Q

What is primary sclerosing cholangitis? (PSC)

A

Inflammation of the bile ducts causes scarring and then stricturing.

This blockage in bile flow will result in gradual liver cell damage or cirrhosis.

Treatment may consist of nothing for minor PSC or endoscopic Dilatation or placement of Biliary Stent.

Etiology is unknown.

17
Q

The gallbladder wall is made up of:

A

Serosa, a fibromuscular layer and mucosa

18
Q

By far the most common disease affecting the Biliary system is:

a. Choledocholithiasis
b. Cholecystitis
c. Cholelithiasis
d. Cholangitis

A

c. Cholelithiasis
