Chapter 17 & 22 Flashcards
Triangulation
An approach that uses multiple observers, theoretical perspectives, sources of data, and methodologies (Denzin, 1970)
Conversation analysis
The fine-grained analysis of talk as it occurs in interaction in a naturally occurring situation. These analyses are concerned with the underlying structure of talk in interaction and as such with the achievement order through interaction.
Roots of Conversation analysis (CA) lie in ethnomethodology
Conversation as the basic form through which social order is achieved
Indexicality: the meaning of words is contextually grounded
reflexivity: talk is constitutive of the social context in which it occurs
Indexicality
we can only understand actions through a consideration of their contexts
Reflexivity
we understand actions as building blocks of the social world and not just as predicates of it
Assumptions of Conversation Analysis
- Talk is structure
- Talk is forged contextually
- Analysis is grounded in data
Turn talking - Adjacency pairs
two linked phrases e.g. question and answer, invitation and response, and greeting and returned greeting
Discourse analysis
The version described here is one of particular interest to social scientists and is applied to both naturally occurring and contrived forms of talk and texts
This definition of DA means that discourse is not just a mirror of the social world around us but in many ways plays a key role in producing that world
However, in business and management, there has been a somewhat broader interpretation of this term, referring to a variety of analytical approaches focusing on the discursive, the function of talk and rhetorical devices
Rhetorical analysis
A form of criticism that employs the principles of rhetoric to examine the interactions between a text, an author, and an audience
Critical discourse analysis
tries to discover why some meanings are ‘privileged’ while others are ‘marginalized’, indicating that social reality is what it is declared to be by some and accepted by others
Identifying Rhetorical devices: Tools for framing
1) Contracts
2) List
3) Headline-Punchline/Puzzle-Solution
4) Position taking
5) Pursuit, repetition, alliteration
