The study of behaviour patterns that differ from generally accepted norms.

Maladaptiveness?
- Maladaptive to one’s Self – inability to reach one’s goals, to adapt to the demands of life
- Maladaptive to society – interferes with and disrupts social group functioning.
The 4 ‘D’s
- Discomfort
- Deviance
- Dysfunction
- Danger
Supernatural theories?
mental illness to possession by evil spirits and the displeasure of gods
Somatogenic theories?
disturbances in physical function, resulting from illness, genetic Inheritance, or brain damage.
Psychogenic theories?
focuses on traumatic or stressful experiences.
Trephination?
drilling of holes in skulls to treat head
injuries and epilepsy.
ANXIETY DISORDER?
People with anxiety disorders feel an abnormal amount of discomfort from common things
Phobias?
A fear of a specific stimulus or situation.
* The sufferer of a phobia usually knows that the fear is irrational but cannot do anything about it.
* Phobias can be:
a. Specific phobia
b. Social phobia
Obsessive Disorder?
unwelcome repetitive thoughts or impulses that cause anxiety, distress, or frightening thoughts.
Compulsions Disorder?
An irresistible urge to carry out certain repetitive acts that reduce anxiety.
Examples of compulsions:
- Hand washing
- Checking
- Repeating behaviours
- Arranging things
- Cleaning
SCHIZOPHRENIA?
is a serious psychological disorder marked by delusions, hallucinations, and loss of contact with reality.
-There is no single cause of schizophrenia
Personality Disorders?
A personality disorder is a long-lasting but frequently less severe disorder.
-They are characterized by Three ‘clusters’:
A) Odd, eccentric
B) Dramatic/erratic
C) Anxious/inhibited
