Chapter 16.2 Flashcards
The ganglionic neuron synapses in three locations.
– Sympathetic chain ganglia
– Collateral ganglia
– Adrenal medullae
Describe the sympathetic chain ganglia.
It’s on both sides of the vertebral column and controls effects in the body wall, thoracic cavity, head, neck, and limbs
Describe the collateral ganglia
it’s anterior to vertebral bodies and contains ganglionic neurons that innervate
abdominopelvic tissues and viscera
Describe the adrenal medulla
It’s at the center of each adrenal gland and is a modified sympathetic ganglion. When stimulated they release neurotransmitters into bloodstream.
Describe the fibers in the sympathetic divisions.
– Preganglionic fibers
▪ Relatively short
▪ Ganglia located near spinal cord
– Postganglionic fibers
▪ Relatively long, except at adrenal medullae
Cervical, inferior lumbar, and sacral chain ganglia receive preganglionic fibers from
T1-L2
Only thoracic and superior lumbar ganglia1 2(T L )−receive preganglionic fibers
white rami
What is the function of the collateral ganglia
Reduce blood flow and energy use by organs not vital to short-term survival
– Release stored energy
Adrenal medulla synapse on cells that secrete
▪ Epinephrine (adrenaline)
▪ Norepinephrine (noradrenaline)
