What does pulse measure?
The number of beats per minute
Areas your able to find a pulse
-Temporal artery (head)
-Carotid artery (neck)
-Apical artery (chest)
-Brachial artery (forearm area)
-Radial artery (wrist)
-Femoral artery (below the stomach)
-Popliteal artery (behind knee)
-Posterior tibial artery (inner ankle)
-Dorsalis pedis artery (below big toe)
What are common places we check pulse?
Radial artery
What is it that can affect our pulse rate?
Anxiety/Distress, Drugs, Exercise, Medications
Pulse rate for different age ranges
(bpm - beats per min)
Adults (60 - 100 bpm)
Children 6 to 12 (70 -120 bpm)
Children 1 to 5 (80 - 150 bpm)
Infants >1 (100 - 160 bpm)
TACHycardia
High heart rates - Abnormally fast (over 100)
-can be caused by anxiety or distress
BRADycardia
Low heart rates - Abnormally slow
-can slow with medications
Arrhythmia
An Abnormal heart rate, sound, rhythm or volume
