Chapter 16 Ventilation Rules and Equipment Flashcards
What are the three types of size-ups?
Initial
Continuing
Division-area-group size-up
Plans for ventilation operations are based on what three primary considerations?
Direction of travel, method of pressurization, and type of opening
What are the two avenues used to direct the travel of contaminants within a structure?
Horizontal and vertical
Why can vertical ventilation be the preferred avenue of exhaust?
It provides a natural avenue for rising contamininants, and it exhausts the most dangerous portions of the contaminants first
What are the four basic types of ventilation openings?
Natural openings
Construction openings
Heat openings
Directional openings
What is another name for a directional ventilation opening?
Strip ventilation
What is the minimum number of ladders that should be placed to a structure?
Two
How far should the fly of an extension ladder be raised above a parapet or the roofline?
Far enough to be easily seen
How can the location and extension of a structure fire be determined?
Visual size-up or indicator openings
What is the proper depth of cut for a power saw?
Normally, cuts should only be so deep as to cut through the roof decking
A vent pipe that appears to be growing upward is an excellent indicator of what?
Roof is sagging and possibly about to fail
Ventilators for heat generating appliances are generally identified how?
They have a serrated top suspended over the pipe
Ventilators for attics or top floors can be indentified how?
They have a capped top or a turbine
How much more efficient is a ventilator with an operational turbine than one that has been taken off?
30 percent more efficient
What is the recommended size roof opening for a dwelling? Commercial property?
4’x4’
8’x8’
When ventilating a roof that has been exposed to fire and is weakend, where do you start the cut?
Start the cut in the weakest portion of the roof and work towards the strongest portiion–and towards egress
What is clearspan?
It is the uninterrupted or unsupported span of a roof or its structural members
What should you do to a rock or gravel roof before using the chain saw?
Cut a small hole through the rock and gravel. The chan saw can then be used
What is the standard configuration of a pick-head axe?
six-pound head mated to a 32-33 inch handle
What part of the rotary saw blade should you use for cutting?
always us the lower portion of the blade
What is the limited depth of a rotary saw?
3 1/2”- 5”
What governs the depth of cut of a chainsaw?
Length of the guide bar–varies from 12-24 inches
At a minimum, how big should the engine be on a fire service chainsaw?
70cc or 4 cubic inches
What is a dependable chain pitch?
.404 inches
What is an easy and inexpensive way to reduce build up of waste material on chain saws?
Spraying vegetable shortening on a clean engine and bar.
What is a safe depth cut?
being deep enough to create a ventilation opening without impairing the structural integrity of the roof
On older saws with manual oilers, how often should the chain be lubricated?
once every 10 seconds
When examing carbide chains, when should you replace the chain?
When you find:
- -3 damaged teeth in a row, 6 damaged teeth total
- -Cracked or broken tie straps
- -dull teeth
When using a bullet chain on a chainsaw, when do you replace the cutter? When do you replace / repair the chain?
replace the cutter if 50 percent of the carbide is missing
repair or replace the chain if more than 50 percent of the cutters are damaged or broken
Because of the fuel additives and alcohol added to todays fuels, how often should you change the fuel in the saws and supply cans?
once a month
