Chapter 1.6 Urban Flashcards
Zone 1 - is the
CBD
Zone 2 is the
Inner city/zone of transition
Zone 3 is
old residential
Zone 4 is
new residential
Zone 5 is
greenbelt
The bid rent theory is that land price
decreases in value from the center to the outskirts
The CBD is expensive because
people want a prestigious post code, the area attracts alot of tourists, there are lots of shops and the zone is the most accessible
The greenbelt has
farmland which allows crops to be grown, there are business parks because the land is cheap and there is room for expansion .
Identification of the CBD include
Tourist information center, grid iron street pattern, major roads converge, bus and railway stations, townhall.
Zone 4 has
houses with gardens to attract families, large homes, houses with driveways as people commute and modern housing
Inner city (Zone 3) has
houses mixed with industry, tenements with expensive land, little open space and pollution
problems in CBD are
shopping centres, shop closures, land rent is very high, many shops have closed and moved off to outlets, traffic congestion
Solutions in CBD are
convert former public buildings to flats, demolish old industrial sites
Park and ride schemes
To reduce traffic congestion in Glasgow measures such as
new roads such as M74, improved public transport, new rail links, longer trains, bus lanes
Towns appear outside Glasgow because
people were moved out of the Gorbals to new towns when the tenements were demolished
