Chapter 16: The Senses Flashcards
What do transducers do?
they convert stimulus energy into chemical energy
What is “sensation?”
stimulus we are consciously aware of
T/F : All stimuli result in sensations
False - only a small portion are interpreted, the remainder go to areas of the brain that stimulate responses we’re not aware of (ie blood pressure)
What 4 categories provide the CNS with information regarding a given stimuli?
- modality
- location
- intensity
- location
_________ ________ helps determine stimulus duration
Receptor adaptation
What is “adaptation?”
decreased sensitivity to a continuous stimulus
What is a characteristic of “tonic receptors?”
- limited adaptation
- respond continuously (pain, head position)
What is a characteristic of “phasic receptors?”
- rapid adaptation
- only respond to new stimuli (pressure)
What are the 5 “special senses?”
- vision
- audition
- olfaction
- gustation
- equilibrium
What are the 5 types of sensory receptors?
- chemoreceptors
- thermoreceptors
- photoreceptors
- mechanoreceptors
- nociceptors
How is a receptor classified?
- modality
- stimulus origin
- receptor distribution
What responds to light touch?
Merkel cells
What responds to deep pressure?
Pacinian corpuscles
What allows for shape/texture recognition?
Meissner’s corpuscles
How often are olfactory cells replaced?
every 40-60 days
