chapter 16 sound Flashcards
why cant we hear the sound made in space?
sound only travels in matter and it space, there is no matter or air surrounding therefore sound cannot be heard
what matter does sound travel fastest in and why?
sound travels fastest in solid. when the molecules start to vibrate at one end, the energy is transferred to the neighbouring molecules quickly as the molecules are packed very closely together
what is the speed of sound in solids, liquids and gas?
solids: 5000m/s - 6000m/s
liquids: 1500m/s
gas: 330 m/s
what is the external ear and what is its function?
a cup like flap that collects sound
what is the ear canal and what is its function?
it is a tube that channels the sound to the eardrum
what is the ear drum and what is its function?
a skin flap that vibrates according to the sound coming in
name the three bones in the ear after the eardrum and its function.
the hammer, anvil, stirrup then transfers the vibration to the inner ear
what is the cochlea and what is its function?
its a shell shaped chamber which vibrates according to the different frequencies
what is the function of the ear nerve?
receives electrical signals from the vibrations of the cochlea and send a signal to the brain which then interprets the sound
what is frequency?
the number of cycles per second made by the vibrating source of sound is called the frequency of the sound
what are the uses of sound?
entertainment, warning of danger and communication
what is sonar and what is is used for?
a technique that uses sound to gather information about the environment. can be used for providing information about underwater conditions and objects surrounding the ship
what is ultrasound and what is is used for?
a sound that with frequencies above 20,000 Hz which cannot be heard by the human ear. used to observe the internal body without the need for operation: like observing fetuses inside a pregnant mother.
what is noise and what is it measured in?
noise is a collection of unpleasant notes that is unpleasant or may even be harmful. decibels (dB)
