Chapter 1.6 - 'Radiation' Flashcards
1
Q
Define radiation.
A
The emission of energy as electromagnetic waves.
2
Q
Define what radiation is formally known as.
A
Electromagnetic Radiation.
3
Q
State the three effects of light hitting an object.
A
Absorption, reflection and transmission.
4
Q
Electromagnetic radiation is emitted by all objects on the basis that?
A
The object is above absolute zero.
5
Q
List the factors impacting the rate of emission and absorption.
A
- Surface area - The larger the higher the rate of absorption and emission.
- Temperature - The greater the difference, the greater rate of energy transfer.
- Wavelength of the incident radiation - Matte black surfaces are almost perfect absorbers and emitters of radiant energy at all wavelengths.
- Surface colour and texture - Roughened, dark surfaces will heat up faster than a shiny, light one.
