Chapter 16 - Organic Analysis Flashcards
How to test for an Alkene?
Shake with Orange Bromine Water
Solution should be discoloured
How to test for Halogenoalalkanes?
- Add aqueous Sodium Hydroxide, NaOH
- Add Warm Nitric Acid
- Add aqueous silver Nitrate
Solution should become a precipitate of AgX
How do we test for Primary/Secondary Alcohols?
Using Acidified Potassium Dichromate
Turns Orange to Green
How do we test for Aldehydes?
- Tollens Regent, silver mirror produced
- Fehling’s Solution, blue to red precipitate produced
What is High Resolution Mass Spectrometry?
It Mass Spectrometry but allows us to view the mass more accurately to help distinguish compounds that would have the same mass if rounded
What may happen to the Mr in Mass Spectrometry?
It may decrease due to fragmentation during TOF or Ionisation
What is IR Spectroscopy?
Increasing vibrational energy in a covalent bound IR radiation to help us identify the bonds within the sample
What affects the frequency of IR absorbed?
- The position of the bond
- Mass of the bond, vibrational energy is inversely proportional to mass
What is the Fingerprint Region?
The area under 1500cm^-1 which contains vibrations unique compared to every other compound
