Chapter 16 - Fabric Colouration and Decoration Flashcards
Printing and Dyeing
Rules
- wear rubber gloves and protective clothing
- avoid inhaling dyes
- no eating
- store in good container and place
- dye into water
- need good ventalation
- equipment is seperate
- dispose carefully
Printing Principles/Steps
- bed is prepared
- viscose printing paste
- tool pressed onto fabric
- repeate
- heat set onto fabric
- wash fabric
Types of Printing
Block Printing
type, how, about
direct printing
design carved into block
block made from potato, wood, foam, metal, lino
old method
time consuming
type of printing
Warp Printing
how, looks, used
printed onto warp yarn before weaving
blurry muted design
used for furnishings
types of printing
Baltik Printing
type of printing, medium, about
resist printing, wax is medium, process can be repeated, wax is removed after printing, slow and labour intensive
types of printing
Screen Printing
type, with what
resist printing, hand or machine, from stencils, screen for each colour
types of printing
Ikat Printing
type, used, how
resist printing, both yarns used, bind yarns at intervals along length then paint/print onto with dyes
types of printing
Heat-Transfer Printing
main principle, how
main principle is sublimation, applied with special paper at high temperature and pressure
types of printing
Direct Digital Printing
how, scale, results, types of dyes
print straight onto fabric using inkjet technology, large scale, best results,
disperse dyes = polyester
reactive dyes = natural fibre
dyeing
Principles
- wet fabric (easier dye uptake)
- dissolve dye in water
- immerse fabric in dye bath
- bath is agitated (assist dye uptake)
- dye solution goes through migration process. The molecules move into the fabric therefore bath looses colour
- dye molecules go through diffusion by fixation. water temperature is lowered, moderents added
What fabric
Dye type = Direct
Cellulosic
What fabric
Dye type = Reactive
Cellulosic, wool, silk, nylon
What fabric
Dye Type = Sulfer
Cellulosic
What Fabric
Dye type = Acid
wool, silk, nylon, polyester
what fabric
Dye type = basic
discharge on cotton, synthetics
