A

Sherman decided that in order to win, “total war” must be waged on the Confederacy. He wanted to lead his troops through Confederate lands, destroying every building, railroad, etc.

A

Sherman’s March destroyed TONS of everything in the Confederacy, so it was overall weakened. On top of this, many Confederated started to believe that they had no chance to win the war, so morale and support for the war dropped.

A

Term used by Republicans to describe Peace Democrats to imply that they were traitors to the Union.

Who is Clement Vallandigham and why did he join the Copperheads?

A

Clement Vallandigham was a Ohio politician. He did not believe in the Republican Party, but rather in the Southern ideologies. He joined the copperheads because he didn’t believe in a war against the South.

Why was Vallandigham arrested? Why was he tried in a military court?

A

He was arrested because he was going against the North values - and suggested that the North gives in to want the South wanted. A military convicted him of of treason for aiding and and abetting the enemy.

What is martial law? Why was it initiated?

A

Marital law - government by military force rather than by citizens. It was initiated so that the North had power to have control over different issues (arrests and trials).

What is the “Twenty Negro Law”?

A

Confederate conscription law that exempted from the draft one white man on every plantation owning 20 slaves or more. The purpose was to exempt owners who would ensure discipline over the slaves and keep up production.
