The caning of Sumner represented the hatred of the South towards the North and the inability to respond to the power of the North. This incident further the strength of the northerners case because it was a representation of how the south treated their own slaves.

This was another name for the Democratic Party to attack the Republican University as believers in racial equality. The Democrats used this far to convince many white to remain loyal to them.
