Was the Anaconda Plan the general military strategy of the Union or the Confederacy?
The Union
What was the basic function of the Anaconda Plan?
To “choke” the Confederacy to death - the Union planned to establish a naval blockade and send land troops to surround the Confederacy. The goal was to cut the Confederacy off from all trade (so they would face a lack of the money and goods needed to support their troops).
Why were the slave states divided at the outbreak of the Civil War?
Because they were considered border states, many of these states were split between anti-slavery and pro-slavery - there was a lot of conflict along the border of the Confederacy and the Union
What action was taken in the border states?
In the North, certain states like Kentucky and Maryland joined the union side - and provided many soldiers for the war. In the south, many politicians were joining the war effort and border states that was under the south - started to form their own army.
How did the election of 1861 influence the border states?
Many southern border states felt that the North had too much power now that a Republican was in power. In gave more confidence to the Unionist side because Lincoln had more control over the rule for anti-slavery in government. This made some states - Virginia to split up into West Virginia to join the Union.
How did Lincoln settle the issue of slavery in border states?
At first have gave the states to agree to a compensated emancipation which would give some kind of benefit to the state if it voluntarily free its slaves. In the end, that plan failed - so then he decided to issue an emancipation proclamation.
