Who issued the Edict of Nantes and what did it do?
King Henry IV issued the Edict of Nantes. IT allowed the Protestants the right to warship in 150 towns throughout France.
What did King Henry IV do and what happened to him?
He issued the Edict of Nantes, sharply lowered the taxes and made the royal officials pay an annual fee to guarantee the right to pass down their position to their heirs. He also tried to make a the country better by building new roads, canals and damages from the civil wars. He was murdered in 1610 by a Catholic zealot.
What was the Fronde?
A series of violent uprisings during the early reign of Louis XIV triggered by growing royal control and oppressive taxation.
Which group of people did Louis the XIV select as counselors?
He select counselors from the recently ennobled or upper middle class.
What happened to the Edict of Nantes in 1685?
King Louis XIV revoked it.
What happened to the French Huguenots?
The churches of the Huguenots are destroyed, Calvinist schools were closed down, and the Huguenots were either exiled or forced to be converted to Catholicism.
What is Versailles?
It’s a palace and became the center of political, social and cultural life. The king requires every noble to stay in there for part of a year.
What was the system of patronage?
A higher-ranked individual protected the lower-ranked one in return for loyalty and service.
What language was replacing Latin?
French. The royal courts of Sweden, Russia, Poland and Germany all spoke French.
How control King Louis XIV and how did this person control the wealth and economy of the country?
Jean-Baptiste Colbert. He used mercantilism.
How did France decrease the number of goods being imported and increase the number of goods being exported?
France began producing everything French people need in France to prevent people from buying things from other countries. They mainly export textiles since it’s the biggest factor in the French economy. Colbert also abolish many domestic tariffs and raised tariff on foreign goods.

Why did Louis XIV kept France at war for most of his rule?
He thinks that “the character of a conqueror is regarded as the noblest and highest of titles.” He wanted to pursuit that title so he kept France at war.
