Chapter 15 Vocab Flashcards
A complex group of disease characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells
Cancer
Refers to a cancerous tumor that has a tendency to invade and destroy nearby tissue and spread to other parts of the body
Malignant
When cells that are not normal continue to multiply form lumps or masses
Tumors
Refers to a noncancerous tumor that has a well-defines boundary, grows at a relatively slow pace, and demonstrates limited growth
Benign
The spread of cancer from one part of the body to another. Cells in the metastatic (secondary) tumor are the same as those in the original (primary) tumor
Metastasis
Damage to the genes involved in cell division
Mutation
Process by which normal cells are transformed into cancer cells.
Carcingenesis
Early detection of asymptomatic disease through preventative screenings and tests
Secondary prevention
Cancer that develops as a result of inheriting a cancer-causing mutation from parents. Also known as a center susceptibility gene.
Heredity cancer
The type of genes involved in cancer.
Cancer susceptibility gene
Chemical that damages cells and causes cancer.
Carcinogen
Treatment for a person who is symptomatic and ill that is typically offered by medical specialists.
Tertiary prevention
Actions that keep the disease process or health condition form becoming established in the first place by eliminating causes of disease (reducing know risk factors) or increasing resistance to disease
Primary prevention
Early detection of asymptomatic disease through preventative screenings and tests
Secondary prevention
Checking for cancer in people who have no symptoms of the disease
Cancer screening
