Chapter 15 - Special Senses Flashcards

1
Q

Olfactory Pathway

A
  1. Odorants are inhaled
  2. Cilia of the olfactory receptor cell dendrites
  3. Olfactory receptor cell dendrites
  4. Olfactory receptor cell body
  5. Olfactory receptor axon
  6. Olfactory Axons merge to create the Olfactory Bulb (CN I)
  7. Down the Olfactory Tract
  8. Primary Olfactory Cortex of the Temporal Lobe

Q

Gustatory Pathway

A
  1. Vagus Nerve (X), Glossopharyngeal Nerve (IX), Facial Nerve (VII) carry information from the tongue (taste receptors)
  2. Solitary Nucleus in the Medulla Oblongata
  3. Thalamus
  4. Primary Gustatory Cortex of the Parietal Lobe

Q

Visual Pathway

A
  1. Left Nasal Retina (LNR) and Right Nasal Retina (RNR) send information to the Optic Chiasma
  2. Left Temporal Retina (LTR) and Right Temporal Retina (RTR) send information to the Optic Chiasma
  3. LNR and RNR cross at the Optic Chiasma and head down the Optic Tract
  4. LTR and RTR stay on the same side of the Optic Chiasma and head down the Optic Tract
  5. Information from the Optic Tract is sent to the following places: 1) Pretectal Area of the Midbrain, Superior Colliculus on the Midbrain, and Lateral Genticulate Nucleus of the Thalamus
  6. Optic Radiations lead to the Primary Visual Cortex of the Occipital Lobe

Auditory Pathway

A
  1. Mechanical waves comes into the Auricle (Pinna)
  2. Down the External Auditory Canal
  3. Vibrate the Tympanic Membrane
  4. Which will vibrate the Malleus, Incus, and Stapes
  5. Through the Vestibule (which contains the utricle and saccule that contain receptors cells that detect head tilting and linear movement)
  6. Through the Cochlea
  7. Down the Cochlear Nerve (also made up of the Vestibular Nerve - Vestibulocochlear Nerve (VIII))
  8. To the Cochlear Nuclei of the Medulla Oblongata
  9. To the Superior Olivery Nucleus of the Pons
  10. To the Inferior Colliculus of the Midbrain
  11. To the Medial Genticulate Nucleus of the Thalamus
  12. To the Primary Auditory Cortex of the Temporal Lobe
