Chapter 15 - Special Senses Flashcards
1
Q
Olfactory Pathway
A
- Odorants are inhaled
- Cilia of the olfactory receptor cell dendrites
- Olfactory receptor cell dendrites
- Olfactory receptor cell body
- Olfactory receptor axon
- Olfactory Axons merge to create the Olfactory Bulb (CN I)
- Down the Olfactory Tract
- Primary Olfactory Cortex of the Temporal Lobe
2
Q
Gustatory Pathway
A
- Vagus Nerve (X), Glossopharyngeal Nerve (IX), Facial Nerve (VII) carry information from the tongue (taste receptors)
- Solitary Nucleus in the Medulla Oblongata
- Thalamus
- Primary Gustatory Cortex of the Parietal Lobe
3
Q
Visual Pathway
A
- Left Nasal Retina (LNR) and Right Nasal Retina (RNR) send information to the Optic Chiasma
- Left Temporal Retina (LTR) and Right Temporal Retina (RTR) send information to the Optic Chiasma
- LNR and RNR cross at the Optic Chiasma and head down the Optic Tract
- LTR and RTR stay on the same side of the Optic Chiasma and head down the Optic Tract
- Information from the Optic Tract is sent to the following places: 1) Pretectal Area of the Midbrain, Superior Colliculus on the Midbrain, and Lateral Genticulate Nucleus of the Thalamus
- Optic Radiations lead to the Primary Visual Cortex of the Occipital Lobe
4
Q
Auditory Pathway
A
- Mechanical waves comes into the Auricle (Pinna)
- Down the External Auditory Canal
- Vibrate the Tympanic Membrane
- Which will vibrate the Malleus, Incus, and Stapes
- Through the Vestibule (which contains the utricle and saccule that contain receptors cells that detect head tilting and linear movement)
- Through the Cochlea
- Down the Cochlear Nerve (also made up of the Vestibular Nerve - Vestibulocochlear Nerve (VIII))
- To the Cochlear Nuclei of the Medulla Oblongata
- To the Superior Olivery Nucleus of the Pons
- To the Inferior Colliculus of the Midbrain
- To the Medial Genticulate Nucleus of the Thalamus
- To the Primary Auditory Cortex of the Temporal Lobe
