Chapter 15 - Neurologic Emergencies | Vital Vocabulary Flashcards
Swelling or enlargement of part of a blood vessel, resulting from weakening of the vessel wall
Aneurysm
Inability to understand and/or produce speech
Aphasia
Sensation experienced prior to seizure; serves as warning sign that a seizure is about to occur
Aura
Interruption of blood flow to the brain that results in loss of brain function. Also called a stroke
Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA)
State of profound unconsciousness from which one cannot be roused
Coma
Slurred speech
Dysarthria
Clotting that forms in a remote area and travels to site of blockage
Embolus
Seizures that result from sudden high fevers, particularly in children
Febrile Seizures
Seizure characterized by severe twitching of all body’s muscles that may last several minutes; formerly known as a grand mal seizure
Generalized Seizure
Weakness on one side of the body
Hemiparesis
One of the two main types of stroke; occurs as a result of bleeding inside brain
Hemorrhagic Stroke
Condition characterized by a low blood glucose level
Hypoglycemia
Loss of bowel and/or bladder control; may be result of generalized seizure
Incontinence
Lack of oxygen in cells of the brain that causes them not to function properly
Ischemia
One of the two main types of stroke; occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is cut off by blockage (e.g., clot) inside blood vessel
Ischemic Stroke
Seize affecting a limited portion of the brain
Partial Seizure
Period following seizure that lasts between 5 & 30 minutes; characterized by labored respirations and degree of altered mental status
Postictal State
Generalized, uncoordinated muscular activity associated with loss of consciousness; a convulsion
Seizure
Condition which seizures recur every few minutes or last more than 30 minutes
Status Epilepticus
Interruption of blood flow to brain that results in loss of brain function; also called a cerebrovascular accident (CVA)
Stroke
Clotting of cerebral arteries that may result in interruption of cerebral blood flow and subsequent stroke
Thrombosis
Type of seizure that features rhythmic back-and-forth motion of an extremity and body stiffness
Tonic-Clonic Seizure
Disorder of brain in which brain cells temporarily stop working because of insufficient oxygen, causing stroke like symptoms that resolve completely within 24 hours of onset
Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
