Chapter 15 Fire hoosle Flashcards
NFPA 1961
Standard on fire hose
Hose diameter
Is internal. Some will expand past this with pressure
Suction hoses
Soft sleeve hose is minimum 15 ft with two female ends used to connect pumper to hydrant (also called soft suction) - 65 to 150mm
Hard suction 10ft (3m) also 65 to 150mm
NFPA 1963
Standard for fire hose connections
Says all threads must match
Cast - very weak, crack easy
Extruded - Aluminium - middle strength
DROP FORGED! - strongest, made of brass or other malleable metal
Lugs on the male shank, swivel on female (lugs on swivel)
Three lug types
Pin recessed and rocker
Pins aren’t common as they catch on shit
Booster has recessed so they don’t catch on the reel (need pin lug spanner to get to recessed holes)
Hose maintenance
Don’t pack tightly
Remove and repack hose every 6 months if unused
Flat load better than leaving hose on its edge for damage
Left hanging damages it
NFPA 1962
Care service testing maintenance and replacement of fire hose
Test hose within 90days before using it for first time, annually after
Washing
Hard rubber, hard intake and rubber jacket only require rinsing
Woven jacket need to be brushed/soaped
Valves
Ball - pumper discharges and gate wyes Gate - from hydrant Butterfly - large pump intakes All open when in line with hoosle Clapper - siamese appliances
Valve devices
Wye - single hoseline into two or more lines. Single female multiple male
Siamese - combines multiple lines into one
Water thief - Inlet and outlet with matching sizes and smaller outlets that steal water
Fittings
Adapters are for things like male to male
Reducers are for different sizes
Elbows for supply lines into trucks
At standpipe outlets to prevent kinks
Strainers
Have an eyelet so you can tye hard suction hose to keep it off bottom
Hose tools
Hose roller - to prevent it rubbing on sharp edges
Hose jacket - temporarily seal a rupture
Hose clamp - 20 ft min behind apparatus, 5 ft from coupling, clamp slowly
Loads
Flat - easy, vibration doesn’t damage, sharp bends wear on hose. Start 12-18 inches from the end for couplings.. Dutchman
Accordion load - requires only 2-3 (4 works best) and easy to grab just a few sections
Horseshoe load - fewer sharp bends than the other two. Easy to take too much hose and hard to grab some lengths for a shoulder carry. LDH doesn’t work (gets tangled)
