Chapter 15: Acids and Bases Flashcards
Acid ionization constant
K_a. The equilibrium constant for the acid ionization.
Base ionization constant
K_b. The equilibrium constant for the base ionization.
Conjugate acid-base pair
An acid and its conjugate base or a base and its conjugate acid.
Ion-product constant
Product of hydrogen ion concentration and hydroxide ion concentration (both in molarity) at a particular temperature.
Lewis acid
a substance that can accept a pair of electrons
Lewis base
a substance that can donate a pair of electrons
Percent ionization
Ration of ionized acid concentration at equilibrium to the initial concentration of acid
pH
The negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration.
Salt hydrolysis
The reaction of the anion or cation, or both, of a salt with water
Strong acid
Strong electrolytes which are assumed to ionize completely in water
Strong base
strong electrolytes which are assumed to ionize completely in water
Weak acid
weak electrolytes that ionize only to a limited extent in water
Weak base
weak electrolytes that ionize only to a limited extent in water
