Accident
an unexpected unintended event that has the potential to cause bodily injury
Incident
an occurrence that is considered unusual, undesired, or out of the ordinary and disrupts the normal routine for the patient or the resident, the healthcare facility or both
Risk factors for accidents
-age
- meds
- poor mobility
-sensory impairment
- confusion and disorientation
- loss of consciousness
What is the leading cause of accidental deaths in the elderly
Falls
falls are the most common cause of:
-functional decline
-hospital admission
- emotional trauma
- nursing facility placement for older people
Entrapment
occurs when a person becomes trapped in the side rail, or between the side rail and the mattress
Incident (occurrence report)
A preprinted document that is completed following an accident involving a patient or resident
Physical restraint
attached to or near a person’s body to limit a persons freedom of movement or access to his or her body
Chemical restraint
any medication that alters a persons mood or behavior such as a sedative or tranquilizer
Why would you use a restraint?
to provide postural support, to protect the patient or resident from harm, and to protect the staff from harm
Complications of restraint?
-Strangulation
-Bruises, nerve damage, and skin abrasions
-Permanent tissue damage
- broken bones and other serious injuries
- complications of immobility
- incontinence
- loss of independence
