Imperialism
The extension of a nation’s power over other lands
Nationalism
The unique identity and cultural beliefs of a nation and its want to be independent, countries work in self-interests
Militarism
When a country aggressively builds up their Armed Forces in preparation for war, reliance on military
Allied powers
Includes:
France, GB, Russia, Serbia
(Later includes Italy, Japan, and US)
Central powers
Includes:
Germany, AH, Italy
(Later Italy leaves and Turkey joins)
Conscription
A military draft (when men were drafted into the military by random pick)
No man’s land
Land between two trenches of opposing sides, wide open, surrounded by barbed wire
Mobilization
The process of assembling troops and supplies and preparing them for war
Trench warfare
Fighting from ditches protected by barbed wire
War of attrition
A war that was based on wearing down the other side with continuous attacks and heavy losses, exhausting the other side
Planned economy
An economic system directed by the government which took over personal businesses
Armistice
An agreement to end fighting
Neutral
Not picking a side, in between
Reparation
A payment/fine made to the winner by the loser to cover the costs of war
Propaganda (what are the 3 P’s too!)
Ideas that were spread to influence the public opinion for or against a cause
