Capitalism
An economic system in which an individual or business invests in or owns the means of production and distribution
Imperialism
The extension of a nation’s power over other lands
Protectorate
A political unit (city or country) that depends on another government for it’s protection
Colony
A settlement of people living in a new territory, linked with the dominant country by trade and government
Exploit
To make use of something for someone’s own advantage
Boer
Descendants of Dutch settlers
Direct rule
A colonial government in which local elites were removed from power and replaced by a new set of officials from the colony’s country
Annex
To incorporate into an existing city or country (political unit)
Indigenous
Native to a region
Sepoy
An Indian soldier hired by the British East India Company to protect the company’s interests in India
Viceroy
A governor who ruled as a representative of a monarch
Dollar diplomacy
Relations or negotiations between two countries that seeks to strengthen the power of a country and the relationship between the two countries in a financial way
Indirect rule
A colonial government in which local rulers are allowed to maintain their positions of authority (Colonial power ruling through the local rulers)
