William the Conqueror
The duke of Normandy who invaded England claiming to be the ruler as he was the cousin of the late King Edward. William kept 1/5 of the land for himself and split the rest among Norman lords after defeating his competition, Harold Godwinson
Henry II
And English king who added to his lands by marrying Eleanor of Aquitaine from France. He ruled from 1154 to 1189 and introduced a jury into the English courts as well as sent a judge to every part of England to collect taxes, settle lawsuit, and punish crimes.
Common Law
A unified body of law formed from rulings of England’s royal judges that serves as the basis for law in many English speaking countries today, including the United States.
Magna Carta
“Great Charter”- A document guaranteeing basic political rights in England, drawn by nobles and approved by King John
Parliament
A body of representatives that makes laws for a nation(England)
Hugh Capet
The beginner of the Capetian dynasty of French Kings that lasted from 987 to 1328. He was an undistinguished duke who ruled little land, however, Paris was at the center of it
Philip II
A Capetian king who ruled from 1180 to 1223. During his reign he seized many lands including Normandy from King John and earned the name Augustus which comes from the Latin word for “majestic” (French)
Estates-General
An assembly of representatives from all three of the Estates, or social classes, in France
