Also known as Charles; became ruler in 771 after his brother’s death; 6’4” tall; spread Christianity; reunited Europe for the first time since Roman Empire; traveled to Rome in 800 to crush an unruly mob and was crowned emperor by by Pope Leo III; limited authority of nobles; crowned son Louis the Pious as emperor 1 yr before death; died in 814

The era in European history that followed the fall of the Roman Empire, lasting from about 500 to 1500- also called the medieval period
