Ageism
Discrimination of older people due to increased age
Delirium
Sudden/abrupt, worse at night, can last hours to less than a month and involves restlessness, agitation, and usually has physiological causes such as medication reactions, hypoglycemia, tumor, etc.
Dementia
Insidious/slow progression that lasts months to years
Depression
Can happen with major life changes and is not considered a normal part of the aging process even though it is common in aging adults
Elder Mistreatment
Can include physical, emotional, financial, sexual abuse, or neglect. DOJ reports that at least 10% of elders have experienced some form of elder abuse.
Gerontological Nursing
The provision of care that addresses mutually established goals for an older adult, the family, and health care team members
Gerontology
The study of aging adults
Reality Orientation
Communication technique that makes an older adult more aware of the person, place, and time. It’s meant to help restore sense of reality and minimize disorientation
Reminiscence
A method or technique to recall past memories and can be used in coping and uncovering meaning in those moments.
Validation Therapy
Alternative approach to communication with an older adult who is confused. It is meant to convey respect, reassurance , and understanding.
