A

buffer model - relationships help us buffer negative health effects of stress, only relates to stress
main effects - relationships reduce negative health effects even when not under stress, encourages healthy behaviors, increases self esteem, better self care, less risk taking

A
structural - does it exists, how many friends do you have, are you married, etc
function - type of social support or effectiveness
received - when people actually help you
perceived - idea that if you needed hlep, someone would be there, this type can have as big of an impact as other kinds, if not more

tangible support - actual actions, need a ride to the airport, males more likely to do this kind
emotional support - how their feeling, being empathetic, females favor this kind
informational - advice or help
belonging - having a group you feel that you belong to

Discuss the major theories of stress (Walter Cannon: Fight or Flight, Hans Selye: General Adaption Syndrome; Lazarus: appraisal).

A

flight or fight - adaptive, inherited response
selye’s general adaption - three phases of stress, alarm, resistance, exhaustion, this theory isn’t as accepted because see weakness because individuals appraise situations differently
appraisal - do we interpret as harm, threat or benign
primary appraisal - threat or not
secondary - do you have resources to deal with threat
reappraisal - sometimes happens if new info
