Chapter 14 & 20 Flashcards
Vascular dementia
Severe limitations and cognitive dysfunction after a stroke or multiple infarcts
Risk factors for vascular dementia
- Smoking
- Hypertension
- High cholesterol
- Obesity
Symptoms of vascular dementia
- Executive dysfunction
- Motor slowness
- Loss of memory
4 subtypes of Frontotemporal dementia
- Behavioral (most common)
- Semantic PPA
- Non-fluent PPA
- Logopenic PPA
Behavioral variant of FTD symptoms
- Change in personality and social behavior (social disinhibition, loss of decorum)
- Specific cognitive impairments
- Language impairment (not in early stage but later on)
3 subtypes of BV-FTD
- Disinhibition, distractibility and hyperactivity
- Apathy, lack of initiative and behavioral withdrawal
- Stereotypy and compulsive behavior
Progressive non-fluent aphasia symptoms
- Gradually deteriorating language production
2. Apathy, decreased motivation (later stages)
Semantic dementia symptoms
- Breakdown of semantic knowledge
- Language comprehension deteriorates
- Egocentric
- Attached to routines
Age of onset for FTD
Usually between 50 and 60
Duration of FTD
Average of 8 years (range 2-20)
Causes of FTD
Not a lot know but a genetic defect is involved and three proteins are involved in the development of FTD: tau, TDP-43, and FUS.
Mostly in the frontal and temporal cortex
Treatment of FTD
Good counselling, no further treatments are available
Economy of effort
Patients are easy to distract and make minimal effort with neuropsychological assessment
Prevalence FTD
2 in 100.000
Primary progressive aphasia types
- Non-fluent agrammatic
- Semantic
- Logopenic
