Chapter 14 & 18 Flashcards
What is thermodynamics?
When energy is converted from one form to another and energy is transported from one place to another and there is an interaction between matter and energy.
What are the state variables?
- Mass (m)
- Volume (V)
- Density (p)
- Thermal energy (Eth)
- Temperature (T)
What are the 3 states of matter?
- ) Solid
- ) Liquid
- ) Gas
What is the distinguishing factor between liquids and gases?
The liquids are incompressible since they flow but gases are compressible.
What is density?
The mass per unit volume of a certain material.
What is pressure?
The molecules of a gas for instance undergo frequent collisions and they hit the wall which is a force that is applied to a given surface or area.
What factors affect the pressure of the fluid?
- ) The weight of the fluid (gravity)
2. ) The temperature of the fluid (kinetic energy of molecules)
What is atmospheric pressure?
1 atm = 101.3 kPa
What is gauge pressure?
Pg = P - 1atm
What is the pressure of a liquid column?
The pressure at depth d which is due to the weight of the fluid above the point.
What is an ideal gas?
If the volume is held constant then the pressure changes linearly with the temperature.
What is happening at absolute zero?
At this point all gases intersect and p = 0 pa which implies that all motion of the particles stop at this point.
What is the triple point?
At this point all 3 states of matter can coexist.
What is the relationship between the boiling point and pressure?
As the pressure decreases the boiling point decreases as well making it easier to bring the substance to boiling.
What is the critical point?
At this point there is no clear distinction between gases and liquids.
What is the ideal gas law?
PV = nRT PV = NkT
Why is water weird?
Water is odd because it expands when it freezes as a result when water has less pressure it freezes.
What is isotherm?
The temperature is constant.
What is isochoric?
The volume is constant.
What is isobaric?
The pressure is constant.
Is the pressure in a piston changing?
No the pressure is constant.
What is work?
The change in energy.
What are the factors of the expansion?
- ) W < 0
2. ) Eth < 0
What are the factors of the compression?
- ) W > 0
2. ) Eth > 0
