behavior are influenced by the presence of other people and by the
social and physical environment.

others, including how people behave in social settings

Psychology
Scientific study of behavior and mental processes
Social Cognition
Process of attending to, interpreting, and remembering
information about ourselves and others
Implicit social cognition/Implicit bias
Refers to the attitudes or
stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an
unconscious manner. These biases, which encompass both favorable and
unfavorable assessments, are activated involuntarily and without an
individual’s awareness or intentional control.
Areas of Interest in the Study of Social Cognition
how we form impressions of others and manage their impressions of us
Attribution- the process of making inferences about the causes of events
and human behavior
Beliefs one develops to explain human behaviors and characteristics, as well as
situations
Attributing Behavior is a 3-stage process
- You must observe the behavior, whether it is your own behavior or the
behavior of someone else. - You must determine whether the behavior being observed is intentional.
- You attribute the observed behavior.
3 Dimensions of Attribution
- Internal-external
- Controllable-uncontrollable
- Stable-unstable
Internal-External Dimensions
- Internal causes are those factors that are attributed to the person
being observed (inner factors). - External causes attributed to factors outside of the person being
observed (environmental factors).
Controllable-Uncontrollable Dimensions
- Controllable causes an individual can control such as skills
- Uncontrollable causes one cannot control such as luck, others’
actions.
Stable-Unstable Dimensions
- Stability refers to how likely it is the probability of causes will change
over time
