- Would be the first to circumnavigate the Earth (took 3 years voyage)

- Would die in the Philippines at the local’s request to attack their enemies with Magellan’s ships

- Chief architect of the Portuguese commercial empire in Asia
- Focused on taking Malacca because it was an important choke point for trade and movement
- He as well as Portuguese traders would kill many Hindus and Buddhists giving them a bad reputation

- Formed by Ignatius Loyola, this society was focused on:
- Reaffirming and teaching the Roman Catholic faith
- Focus was on Asia because of its huge population
- Asians tolerated Jesuits because they were generally more cleaner and smarter than most Europeans who visited

Jesuit
- Very successful Jesuit who would spend most of his time in Japan
- Preached, taught, and disputed with Buddhist monks
- Died off the coast of China in an effort to spread Christianity to China
Matteo Ricci
Christian missionary who would spread Christianity to China
- Blended with the respective society and dressed as a Confucian scholar
- Was able to learn Chinese quickly and use this to his advantage
- Chinese were impressed by Ricci

Dutch governor-general
- Responsible for the Dutch’s success in the East Indies
- Fixed the naval and admin capital of the Dutch East Indies
- Set up a trading post in Jakarta
- Militarized fort

- English ship master of the East Indies
- First Englishman who goes to Japan
- Gets captured in Japan and lives the rest of his life there
- Inspires English voyagers to travel to Japan
- Tokugawa Ieyasu is rising to power at the time

Monopoly that gave the Dutch ultimate control of the East Indies
- Loose oversight from back home
- Joint stock trading company
- The government gave a monopoly of all trade with the East
- Far more effective than the Portuguese’s monopoly
