Puritanical
Extremely or excessively strict in matters of morals or religion.
Usurpation
The act of seizing, occupying, or enjoying the place, power, or functions of someone without legal right.
Mudslinging
Malicious, unscrupulous attacks against an opponent.
Machine
A hierarchical political organization, often controlled through patronage or spoils, in which professional workers deliver large blocks of voters to preferred candidates.
Spoils
Public offices given as a reward for political support.
Denominations
In American religion, the branches of Christianity, organized into distinct church structures and traditions, such as Presbyterians, Baptists, Disciples of Christ, and so forth.
Evangelical
In American religion, those believers and churches, usually Protestant, that emphasize personal salvation, individual conversion experiences, voluntary commitment, and the authority of Scripture.
Hard money
Metal money-gold or silver-as distinguished from paper money. (The term also came to me and you were liable or secure money that maintained or increased its purchasing power over time. soft money, or paper money, was assumed to inflate or lose value.)
Favorite sons
In American politics, presidential candidates nominated by their own states, primarily out of local loyalty, but not expected to win.
Populist
A political program or style focused on the common people and attacking perspectives and policies associated with the well-off, well-born, or well-educated. (The populist party was a specific third-party organization of the 1890s.)
Divine right
The belief that government or rulers are directly established by God.
Spoils System
The practice of a successful political party giving public office to its supporters.
Deference
The yielding of opinion to the judgement of someone else; in politics, the inclination of lower social or economic classes to conform to the political views and choices of social elites.
Trail of Tears
The route along which the United States government forced several tribes of Native Americans.
Tariff of Abominations
The “Tariff of 1825” was a protective tariff passed by the Congress of the United States on May 19, 1828, designed to protect industry in the northern United States.
