Chapter 13 - Touch - Haptic Perception Flashcards
Haptic perception
Perceptual processing of inputs from many sensory subsystems
- action for perception - active exploration of surroundings
- perception for action - process of using sensory input to prepare us to interact
Exploratory procedures
Particular way of feeling an object in order to learn about one or more of its properties
- FA11 afferetns respond to high frequency vibrations created while swiping fingers acorss rough surface
Efficiency
Haptic search - equally efficient at searching for a target and identifying with distractors
3D search task - people are efficient at searching for shapes, response time increases with number of objects
patterns must balance the limitiations from the skin’s acuity and its field of view (braile)
Haptic object recognition
vision is more effective for raised lines objects because sensory cues available
use computational models (past experiences) to stimulate the brain’s processing of tactile info
haptic object localization
beyond the body create a frame of reference
on the body we’ve been doing forever
